A meditation for beginners that a lot of people really enjoy when they first start to meditate is a chakra meditation. There are seven primary chakras in the body, and moving through each of these energetically can clear out a lot of junk to help the energy in the body flow more freely and openly. The premise of this meditation is that you will focus on the breath and then put your attention on each of the Chakras one at a time from the Base Chakra to the Crown Chakra.
The first Chakra is called the Root Chakra. It is at the base of the spine and when you are sitting cross-legged on the floor it is directly in contact with the earth. This chakra is our deepest most primitive animalistic connection with our physicality and the earth. Your health and life security is all tied into this area.
The second Chakra is called the Navel Chakra as it is centered right below the navel on your belly. This Chakra is the next that speaks after safety and basic physical needs are met. It speaks to love, passion and sexuality. It is centered on giving and receiving and also holds vast creativity too.
The third of the Chakras is the Solar Plexus Chakra. This one is above the navel but not yet at the chest area. It is focused around our personal power. Our ability to use our will and to create alchemy in real life around us. Your discipline, self-control and personal authority all meet at this centre point.
The fourth of the Chakras is the Heart Chakra, my personal favorite. This Chakra is located at the heart. It is the energy centre for love, understanding and compassion. All harmony, balance and unconditional love radiate from this point. If you think this is all woo-woo just look up all the scientific studies where they have measured the electro magnetic patterns of the heart in different situations. This chakra is a very powerful centre indeed. It is also the transition point from “I” to “We”.
Above the fourth Chakra is the fifth, which is the Throat Chakra. This Chakra is centered over the throat area. It is what empowers ones ability to communicate. Realization of truth, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and love to others all manifests through this particular Chakra translating into physical speech shared with others.
The sixth Chakra sometimes called the third Eye Chakra or the Brow Chakra is centered and just above our eyes. This Chakra relates to our ability to “see” but not through the eyes. Rather to see through our wider selves. Our “sight” could be said to be our intuition, insight, imagination and as it becomes more developed our clairvoyance. Self-realization and your ability to project forth your vision onto life originates here in this space.
The last and seventh of the Chakras is called the crown Chakra. This is found at the very top of the head. This is the point where the physical and the spiritual merge together.
From this place the questions of ones physical life and ones spiritual being can be explored. This is your connection with your higher self.
